NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

WHAT IS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY?
According to the official website, "The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921."
HOW DOES ENROLLMENT IN NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY OCCUR?
Throughout the student's freshman and sophomore years, class averages for all core classes are recorded and reported at the beginning of the student's junior year.  If the student's year averages total an average of 92 (not rounded up from 91.999), the student will be contacted by the faculty sponsor, Shawna Steplock, and instructed on the application process.

WHAT ARE THE STANDARDS OF THE EAST BERNARD CHAPTER?
Student members of the East Bernard chapter of the National Honor Society are encouraged to fully participate in as many club activities as they can manage as they are designed to uphold the values of the national organization: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.  Students are to maintain the 92-grade point average while balancing activities that serve and lead others and maintaining a moral and ethical character.  Students that fall below the expectations are placed on probationary status to help develop the areas needing attention.  The growth of the student member is always the goal of the probationary period.

Students are required to accumulate a certain number of points based on, including but not limited to, academics, activities accomplished with or outside of NHS, leadership positions held in and outside of NHS, service hours completed, and unsolicited references of character.  Students are required to submit formal documentation for leadership and service throughout the year prior to graduation.  NHS members serving 2-year terms must accumulate 3500 points while members serving a 1-year term are to accumulate 1800 points.  Members should see the links to documents posted to the right of the webpage.
