In an effort to promote healthy eating habits, the Texas Dept. of Agriculture has created NutriGram-a web-based survey and interactive game assessing children's knowledge of nutrition and their eating habits for grades 3 through 5. NutriGram promotes the 3E's of healthy living-education, exercise and eating right. The school faculty can administer a survey in both English and Spanish twice per year to provide data on our student's knowledge and perspectives regarding making healthy choices. The ultimate goal is to encourage students to take an active part in choosing what they eat, and to provide a direct line of communication between the teacher, student and parent to make healthy eating a regular part of every child's lifestyle. Please visit NutriGram.org for more information.

The East Bernard ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group of individuals who represent various segments of the community. The group acts collectively to provide advice and make recommendations to the school system on various aspects of school health, including, but not limited to: nutrition services, health education, physical education and parent/community involvement. The vision of SHAC is for all students to function at their maximum personal, health and academic abilities. The mission of SHAC is for all students to be physically and emotionally fit through academic classes in health education and through modeling of good health practices. The EBISD School Health Advisory Council will implement the TEA approved CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) curriculum in grades Kindergarten through 8th to achieve the vision and mission of the program. This year's council will meet a minimum of 4 times with a report to be submitted for review during the April EBISD School Board meeting. EBISD policies include mandates regarding the following key focus areas of SHAC.

  • Elementary and Junior high students will engage in at least 30 minutes per school day or 135 minutes per school week of physical activity.
  • All district campuses comply with agency vending machine and food service guidelines restricting student access to vending machines.
  • District-wide penalties for the use of tobacco products by students and others on school campuses or at school-sponsored or school-related activities.
